  • XXXII Anniversary of the Magna Charta Universitatum - Launch of the MCU 2020

    The new Magna Charta Universitatum MCU 2020 will be launched on June 16-17, in a special virtual signing ceremony and online conference that will explore how the values and responsibilities laid out in the MCU 2020 address challenges and pressures universities are facing today.

    The Monitoring and Evaluating Climate Communication and Education (MECCE) Project is delighted to announce the formal launch of its Regional Hub network. The Regional Hub network is one the MECCE Project’s key initiatives for ensuring the project has an impact in a variety of regional and cultural contexts.

  • Antonine University celebrated it’s 25 anniversary

    On 15 May, Antonine University (AU), a Lebanese Catholic institution, celebrated its 25th anniversary with a mass held in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seeds (Hadat-Baabda campus). Live-streamed on social media, the ceremony was celebrated by Father Maroun Abou Jaoudé, AU Chancellor. During the ceremony, Father Jalakh, Rector of AU drew attention to the fact that in less than three decades, the University has managed to carve out a place for itself in the club of the best Lebanese universities, although many challenges still remain.   • University of Groningen - Summer School on Illicit Trade

    The University of Groningen invites applications for the Summer School on Illicit Trade that they will be organising online from 5-9 July 2021, in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). The Summer School includes academic and practical learning about illicit finance, trafficking, and trade, and expert examination into strategies and practices about how to combat illicit trade. This course is the first of its kind in teaching illicit trade in a holistic and practically useful way.
    A scholarship programme has been created to contribute to the diversity and the inclusivity of the Summer School for students coming from least-developed and developing countries. More details on the scholarship eligibility and application procedure can be found at the following link.

  • ACA Think Pieces May 2021

    On 28 May, ACA published the May Think Piece on Supporting higher education institutions to develop strategic plans for more inclusive mobilities. Both authors Valérie Van Hees, Coordinator, and Dominique Montagnese, Inclusive mobility expert, are from the Support Centre for Inclusive Higher Education (SIHO), Belgium. In this article, the authors point to the need for more concrete objectives and action from national systems and make the case for more data collection and impact assessments on underrepresented students. In order to begin remedying the divide between inclusion-related mobility ambitions and realities, the piece ends with frameworks and focused reflection as starting points for designing and updating inclusion strategies and building institutional communities.   • Vacancy Announcement : Rector of the United Nations University

    The United Nations University (UNU) in Japan has launched a call for the position of Rector and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. The term of the current Rector of the UNU, Dr. David M. Malone, will expire on 28 February 2023, and the selected candidate would be expected to take up his/her position on 1 March 2023. The initial appointment will be for a five-year term, with the possibility of a second term.   • University of Oslo - Call for papers in the field of green criminology in Africa

    The Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, University of Oslo launches a call for papers about a topic of free choice connected with terrestrial or marine environmental conflict, destruction and/or resistance in Africa and invites African scholars from African Universities to contribute.

  • EUA webinar series "Greening in European higher education institutions"

    Save the date for the upcoming EUA webinar series "Greening in European higher education institutions". The three-part event will take place between 31 May and 4 June.
    Higher education institutions are well placed to play a key role in achieving the objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, as well as the European Green Deal. To make the sector’s commitment to environmental sustainability more visible and accessible, EUA recently launched an initiative on greening in higher education institutions. In the spring of 2021, institutions from across the EHEA contributed to a large-scale survey, sharing their approaches and activities in the field.

    The input provided in the survey has great value to European universities and to the broader discussion taking place across Europe on this important topic. Therefore, EUA is pleased to present the preliminary findings during this webinar series, featuring discussions with higher education representatives on the following topics:

  • University of Tehran - Call for Applications/ E-Learning Master Degree in Iranian Studies

    The Faculty of Literature and Humanities, University of Tehran, are now accepting applications for MA Iranian Studies (E-Learning). The flexible online design makes it easy for students to follow the courses in their home country and even to combine them with other studies or work.

    Master of Arts in Iranian Studies is an internationally recognized degree from the University of Tehran and it is an intensive two-year program consisting of rigorous coursework and research that will be offered in Persian.   • IAU- UOC - New joint series – Innovative Education for Unshaped Futures (IE4UF)

    The International Association of Universities (IAU) and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) are pleased to announce the launch of a new joint series – the Innovative Education for Unshaped Futures (IE4UF)!
    The series is divided into six 1-hour chapters exploring different topics and bringing together experts to discuss current practices and solutions as well as the challenges ahead, these sessions are open to the public at large. Each of the chapters will be followed by a policy dialogue session the following day where participants can come together to exchange on the topic in question, express ideas, seek advice from peers or provide recommendations. The policy dialogues are limited to 20 participants per session to ensure maximum interaction and exchange. The outcomes of the policy dialogues will be submitted in the form of a report to the UNESCO World Higher Education Conference scheduled for 2022. Register now for :

  • American International University - Bangladesh (AIUB) - Invitation to participate in "Stories of Pandemic - Resonance Beyond the Horizon"

    In the hope of bringing together the everyday triumphs and struggles of young adults from around the world in these uncertain and difficult times, AIUB cordially invites all its collaborative partners to nominate students (individuals/groups) of their respective institutions to register and submit up to 3 stories of their experiences in the pandemic, using any creative format (write-ups, recitals, music, films, art, photos, etc.). Interested Institutions must nominate and have their students complete the registration by the 28th of May 2021, as a confirmation of participation.   • Association of Portuguese Language Universities (AULP) - Fernão Mendes Pinto Prize 2021

    The Association of Portuguese Language Universities (AULP) annually offers a prize called Fernão Mendes Pinto that awards a master’s or doctoral dissertation that contributes to bringing Portuguese-speaking communities closer together, defended during the previous calendar year.
    The value of the Fernão Mendes Pinto Prize is € 8,000 (eight thousand euros) to be awarded in a joint partnership between AULP and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) to the award-winning author and whose publication will be the responsibility of Instituto Camões.   • European University Association (EUA) - Webinar on university funding trends in Europe

    The European University Association (EUA) is organising a webinar on "University funding towards 2030: increasing firepower in the post-pandemic phase". It will take place on Thursday, 27 May 2021 from 14.00 to 15.00 CEST.

    The webinar will offer an in-depth look at the latest university funding trends in Europe and address how to efficiently align funding policies and instruments to support university financial sustainability. Analysing data from across Europe, gathered through the EUA Public Funding Observatory, university leaders, managers and policy makers will have the opportunity to discuss the next era of university funding, sharing both broad and strategic insights, as well as focused and practical approaches.

  • Aurora Universities Network - New Secretary-General

    The Board of the Aurora Universities Network is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Anne-May Janssen to succeed Mr Kees Kouwenaar as Aurora’s Secretary-General. Kees Kouwenaar will retire and step down as Secretary-General on July 25th, 2021. To ensure a smooth and efficient handover, Ms Janssen will start working at the Aurora office on July 1st.

  • UNICA Webinar - "Academia & Industry: Innovation Models"

    UNICA launches a call for participations in the webinar "Academia & Industry: Innovation Models", to be held on 20 April, 15:00 – 17:00 (CET). An excellent panel of speakers will take part in this important event, including Christian J. Suojanen, CEO –Broadreach Global LLC (USA) as keynote, and the Vice-Rectors Research from UCD, UNIL and UAM. Jonathan Seckl, Senior Vice Principal of the University of Edinburgh will chair the discussions.

    Collaboration between universities and industry is an essential component of a balanced research ecosystem, and an important mechanism through which university research delivers economic and societal impact. However, this collaboration also entails risks and challenges.

  • Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) - International conference in future studies

    The Prince Muhammad Bin Fahd Center for Foresight Studies, in cooperation with the International Federation for Future Studies, started the first steps to organize an international conference on future studies during the period from 26-29 October 2021 in Berlin-Germany.
    The World Federation for Future Studies holds an international conference every two years in which all research centers and organizations concerned with future studies participate. This conference is considered the largest and most diverse in the world in future studies. This year’s conference is sponsored by the Prince Mohammed Center for Future Studies.

    The Prince Muhammad Bin Fahd Center for Prospective Studies has recently been recognized as one of the most important research centers in the Arab region in the field of future studies, as a result of the Center’s remarkable achievements in concluding partnership agreements with the International Federation for Future Studies and establishing a branch of the Federation at the PMU headquarters to be Representing the Federation.

    PMU will be the World Federation’s representative in the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as a collaboration agreement with UNESCO and the initiation of procedures to create the UNESCO Chair in Future Studies at the University, as well as partnership agreements with several international institutions in the field of future studies.
    Due to the extreme importance of these types of studies in recent years, the international meeting, which will be held in October of this year, is regarded as a significant move forward for future studies.

  • ACA - Tell us how you engage with society?

    Within the framework of the IHES (Internationalisation in Higher Education for Society) project, the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) launches a survey that aims to identify interesting case studies and examples of good practice in international higher education for society.
    ACA would like to hear your story! To share your examples, make sure to fill out this survey by 1 April 2021, which will take only 15-20 minutes of your time. Interesting examples and best practice will be showcased in an online repository and analysed in an upcoming report.

    This exploration is part of the new Erasmus+ project Internationalisation in Higher Education for Society (IHES) which aims to build internationalisation activities concerning the real needs of society. Based on the needs analysis and this mapping exercise, different approaches will be explored, compared and tested in a "regional lab setting offered by Catalonia and the Olomouc region. The results will feed into new institutional guidelines for implementing IHES activities and the development of a regional model for similar initiatives in the future.   • Malmö University - Agenda for Global Engagement 2021-2026

    Malmö University’s Agenda for Global Engagement has now been launched. The agenda, which is the benchmark for the next six years, will strengthen and develop the University’s global commitment through inclusive and responsible internationalisation work. ​According to the agenda, the University must clarify its global commitment in four key areas:
    - to be a university with globally competent students
    - to be a university with research for global impact
    - to be a university with a global presence
    - to be an inclusive global university

    During the preparation for the agenda, representatives from the entire University were invited to give their input. The work has been carried out through active dialogues with representatives from all faculties, as well as the University Library, administration, and student associations.

  • EUA survey report on Digitally Enhanced Learning and Teaching

    The European University Association (EUA) has published a survey report related to digitally enhanced learning and teaching (DELT) at European higher education institutions over the past seven years and is mainly based on data from a survey conducted between April and June 2020 via an online questionnaire to institutional leadership. This publication has been developed under the Erasmus+ co-funded DIGI-HE project, led by EUA and in partnership with four universities, with the aim of supporting higher education institutions to engage in self-review to develop and enhance their strategic approaches to digitalisation.

  • Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between AUF and UNHCR

    The signing of a global Memorandum of Understanding between the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR ) will take place on February 24, 2021 at 2:00 pm Europe Time (Paris, GMT+01:00).
    The event will recognize AUF’s and UNHCR’s mutual commitment to expanding and enhancing access to education and solutions for refugees in pursuit of the objective to achieve enrolment in higher education for 15% of young refugee women and men.   • IIE American Passeport Project

    Through the IIE American Passport Project, IIE will make grants to U.S. colleges and universities in the IIENetwork starting in spring 2021, so they can help students who are eligible for Pell grants obtain a U.S. passport. Eligibility will be limited to first-year students to ensure that the students have ample time remaining in their college careers and receive help from their advisors to map out a study abroad plan. In this first year, IIE will provide grants to up to 40 U.S.-based IIENetwork member universities and colleges to cover the costs of approximately 25 passports for Pell-eligible U.S. freshmen.

    IIE will select a diverse group of U.S.-based IIENetwork member universities and colleges – including community colleges, HBCUs, MSIs, liberal arts colleges, and universities – with a demonstrated commitment to diversifying study abroad. Award recipients will be chosen by a competitive selection process, and selected institutions will submit nominated students for IIE’s review and approval. IIE will make grant payments to selected institutions that will be responsible for dispersing funds to students.

    A partnership brought together the Network for Transdisciplinary Research td-net, the Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Swiss Universities of Basel, Bern and Geneva, Universities of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland and Luzern, ETH Zurich, University for Teacher Education Zug, to produce a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Transdisciplinary Research "Partnering for Change - Link Research to Societal Challenges" is starting on 22 February and will stay open during 2021.   • UVED has just set up a Moodle platform

    The Virtual University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UVED) has just set up a Moodle platform. The purpose of this platform is to enable institutions to benefit from services, to retrieve the contents of the UVED MOOCs, to integrate them more easily into their own platform, to facilitate their reappropriation by teachers and thus to develop uses within the framework of initial training activities. It also means enabling teachers to have access to quality educational content to train themselves and their students.
    All the UVED thematic trails (videos that make up the MOOCs produced and coordinated by UVED) have been integrated into this platform, as well as 2 transversal trails. There are currently 23 training programmes distributed as follows: 19 courses in French, 2 in English and 2 transversal courses.

  • UNINETTUNO University and the Université Catholique de Lille signing for a Double Degree in Business Management and Digital Technologies

    On Wednesday 27 January the UNINETTUNO Rector Prof. Maria Amata Garito and the Rector of the Université Catholique de Lille Prof. Patrick Scauflaire, have signed the Double Degree academic agreement for the Master of Science in BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES. The program will be proposed with an innovative “blended” approach combining some of the best European experiences in online teaching in e-learning mode (Uninettuno) and traditional (the Université Catholique de Lille): the first year will be in e-learning mode through the UNINETTUNO teaching model, while the second year will be in presence at the Campus of the Catholic University of Lille.

  • The University of Macau kicks off celebration for 40th anniversary

    The University of Macau (UM) held an opening ceremony to kick off the celebration for its 40th anniversary, yesterday 17 January, 2021. The ceremony began with a video that reviewed the history and development of the university over the past four decades. The anniversary slogan ‘Set sail anew on the ruby jubilee’, means that UM is on the threshold of a new era, a time to take stock of past achievements and look ahead to new goals and dreams. As part of the celebration UM also held an Open Day that aimed to allow the public to experience UM’s development in teaching and research as well as its vibrant campus life through exhibitions and activities. This year, the university will hold a series of celebratory activities with different themes, including academic research, cultural exchange, and alumni development.

  • University of South Africa (UNISA) appoints first female Vice Chancellor in 148 years

    The Council of the University of South Africa (UNISA) is proud to announce that, in a move unprecedented since the establishment of the university 148 years ago, it will have its first female Principal and Vice Chancellor with effect from 01 January 2021.
    This follows the approval of the appointment of Professor Puleng LenkaBula as the incoming Principal and Vice Chancellor during the special sitting of the UNISA Council on Thursday, 05 November 2020.
    Professor LenkaBula, who is currently the Vice Rector: Institutional Change, Student Affairs and Community Engagement at the University of the Free State (UFS), has extensive managerial experience in higher education. Prior to occupying the Vice Rector position at the UFS, she was the Dean of Students at WITS University, where she was a member of the Vice Chancellor’s Office (VCO) and the Senior Executive Team. She will succeed Professor Mandla Makhanya who is retiring.

  • University of Bergen introduces new initiatives for Ocean and SDG Research and Teaching

    The University of Bergen, Norway, announced two major initiatives related to the institution’s commitment to the SDGs. The first being the official launch of the One Ocean expedition on 20 August 2020, in which the need to educate future leaders in sustainable ocean management. This SDG 14 research and teaching expedition also goes beyond ocean science and is in line with the new initiative launched at the University of Bergen to strengthen critical thinking and interdisciplinary work on all SDGs.

    On 28 May 2020, the Association of Southeast Asian Institution of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) held it’s Online World Congress 2020 focused on " COVID-19 the Global New Reality".   • University of Bergen and University of the South Pacific - New Ocean and Climate PhD programme launched

    The University of Bergen (UiB) in Norway, and the regional University of the South Pacific (USP) (both IAU members) have intensified their long-term collaboration by launching on 28 April 2020, the Norway-Pacific Ocean-Climate Scholarship Programme (N-POC), an ambitious and interdisciplinary partnership in research and PhD training. UiB’s Rector Dag Rune Olsen mentioned that “the two universities share the conviction that the ocean is central to understanding the urgent challenges posed by climate change”. USP’s Vice-Rector and President Pal Ahluwalia, expressed thanks to the Norwegian Government, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian people for funding this science initiative on the ocean-climate nexus.   • New initiative UOC - Emergency Remote Teaching

    The UOC has marked their 25th anniversary on 6th April 2020, by launching a new initiative to accompany academics in obtaining the skills needed in the situation created by Covid-19.
    Starting on, 9th April 2020, the UOC will organise a cycle of Emergency Remote Teaching which includes training sessions in webinar and MOOC format. The first webinar will be offered under the title "Online learning and teaching: overcoming social distance" by the professor Albert Sangra.
    All the experiences and learning opportunities the UOC offers are brought together on a new dedicated webpage (only available in Spanish and Catalan). It complements the resources already available through the joint portal Conectad@s: la universidad en casa, a project from the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Spanish Rectors’ Conference CRUE designed by UNED and the UOC.

  • University of Tabriz – Impact of COVID 19 on HE

    Many academic and research communities have resolved to work remotely for health and safety reasons due to Covid 19. Iranian University of Tabriz is one of them. From February 23th, upon getting informed about the COVID-19 outbreaks in Iran, chancellery board of the University decided to close all classes and ask students to leave the University. Relevant supports were provided for their transfer with special attention to non-Iranian students who want to leave the country.
    On February 30th, Electronic learning system (LMS) was launched and students could follow their education within this system. The Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT) asked academic staffs to implement the potentials of virtual tools to support the e-learning program in order to ensure that that students can complete their educational program through digital.   • American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) goes virtual : Classes shift online

    Due to the worldwide pandemic Covid-19, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) one of the first private universities in Bangladesh has moved to a new way of working. AIUB is now gone fully virtual with its classes with the licensed Microsoft Teams Application that students and faculty members can access through their own university email IDs. With its dynamic interface and diverse features, approximately 11000 active student users along with around 650 faculty members and officials of AIUB are accessing this online platform, utilizing it to its full capacity for online class lectures and team-based work projects.   • Zhejiang University - Handbook of COVID-19 Prevention and Treatment

    A panel of medical experts from the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU) has just co-produced and published, with Alibaba and the Jack Ma Foundation, a Handbook of COVID-19 Prevention and Treatment. It summarizes the first-hand clinical experience in how to diagnose, screen and treat COVID-19 patients, particularly critically ill patients, and it serves as a point of reference for other countries battling the pandemic. The Chinese and English versions are now available. Versions in other languages, including Italian, Korean, Japanese and Spanish, are being prepared.

  • EUA - InSPIREurope project

    European University Association (EUA) launches a survey as part of the “Initiative to Support, Promote and Integrate Researchers at Risk in Europe” (InSPIREurope). EUA is mapping the situation of researchers at risk and of the institutions that host or employ them. Evidence collected will result in recommendations on how to improve national and European level policy frameworks and funding instruments for enhanced support of researchers at risk and of the higher education and research institutions that host them. The data collection will also support the project’s overall efforts to forge a long-term, cross-sectoral, Europe-wide alliance of organisations supporting researchers at risk.

  • Patrick George Zaky’s arrest : the motion of the University of Bologna

    The arrest and torture of the Egyptian student Patrick George Zaky, enrolled at the University of Bologna, led to the following motion initiated by the Rector Francesco Ubertini and by mutual agreement of the board of governors, the directors of Departments, the Campus Presidents, the Administrative and Technical Staff Council and the Student Council, the Academic Senate, at the special session of 12 February 2020:

    "As members of the scientific and academic community of Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna, we were and still are deeply upset by the recent news of Patrick Zaky’s arrest, as he is a member of our community and a student of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Arts "GEMMA" in Women’s and Gender Studies. We hereby urge representatives of our Government and of the European Union, who have already taken prompt action, to keep monitoring this matter with close attention so that Patrick Zaky’s fundamental rights are safeguarded from any violation. With the high values characterizing our academic community at every level, such as freedom of thought, the centrality of critical thinking, and social responsibility and commitment, we adamantly reaffirm the importance of protecting human and political rights and, in particular, the right to individual freedom and to the freedom of speech, everywhere and in all cases.
    We are deeply committed to Patrick Zaky’s safe and quick return to Bologna, so that he can resume attending his classes. Until then, it is our duty to make sure that the Italian Government and the European Union continue to do their utmost for ensuring Patrick’s return to our community."

  • Makerere University will host the 2020 World Health Summit Regional Meeting

    Each year, the World Health Summit in Berlin is complimented by a Regional Meeting in a different part of the world, where local and regional topics come to the forefront. Each meeting is hosted by the M8 Alliance member holding the World Health Summit International Presidency, which rotates every year.

    The University of Gothenburg and the Centre for Environment and Sustainability” have just released the new report “Environmental Management for Universities – From Policy to Practice” it gathers examples of experiences from the implementation of environmental management systems in two Portuguese universities : the University Institute of Lisbon and the University of Aveiro. The report is a short guide to how an environmental management system can be implemented at a university.     In Nyamata, Rwanda during September 9-20 Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development (GMV), University of Gothenburg and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)-Rwanda carried out a two weeks training for fifteen high-level civil servants from Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda.   • Boston College Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) - Faculty Position Announcement

    In 2020, the Boston College Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) will celebrate a quarter of a century of research and service to the global higher education community. CIHE was established and led by Professor Philip Altbach from its founding in 1995 until his retirement in 2013. Professor Hans de Wit took over and assumed the role of Director and has led the Center ably in the ensuing period. Professor De Wit will retire from his position as full-time CIHE Director in November 2020. Former CIHE leaders Philip Altbatch and Hans de Wit have agreed to continue working for CIHE, as part-time joint Academic Directors, effective November 2020. Current Associate Director, Rebecca Schendel will assume the position of Managing Director of the Center.     The EUA Board is seeking to appoint a new Secretary General to succeed Lesley Wilson, who will step down later this year.
    Lesley Wilson has been with EUA since its creation, serving as Secretary General since 2002.
    Reporting to EUA’s President and Board, the Secretary General will co-develop and implement the Association’s strategic plan with a focus on delivering greater impact for universities; deeper working relationships and partnerships; as well as membership growth. He will also lead a team of 40 staff across offices in Brussels and Geneva, overseeing a €5 million operating budget.

    The electronic publication ’Promoting Core Higher Education Values - Testimonies from the field that has been realized in the framework of the Erasmus + Project, Academic Refuge is now available online.
    The project "Academic Refuge" is a partnership between the University of Oslo, UNICA-Network of Universities from Capitals of Europe, the Scholars at Risk Network (SAR), and the University of Ljubljana, funded by the European Commission under Erasmus+ Strategic Partnerships.
    The e-publication was developed for Higher education stakeholders, refugee students and scholars, scholars at risk, NGOs, networks and Associations working in related fields seeking guidance and examples on how to put the academic values into practice.   • UNA Europa alliance receives prestigious grant to launch European University of the Future

    Twenty years after the Bologna Declaration to develop the European Higher Education Area, seven leading research-intensive universities have been granted 5 million euros of EU funding to kick-start their joint strategy to consolidate a European University ecosystem. By driving innovative education and research collaboration across seven of Europe’s largest comprehensive universities, the UNA Europa alliance is equipped to address the challenges of the future.

    The UNA Europa partners are Freie Universität Berlin, Alma Mater Studiorum Universitá di Bologna, University of Edinburgh, Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie, KU Leuven, Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. UNA Europa’s 1EUROPE project is among the first European University pilots that the European Commission announced on June 26. UNA Europa will receive funding for this three-year pilot under the Erasmus+ Programme.

  • CIVICA – The European University of Social Sciences selected by the European Commission

    The European Commission has chosen to fund the university alliance CIVICA, founded by two IAU members the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (Romania) and Central European University (Hungary) and five other universities: Bocconi University (Italy), the European University Institute (European Intergovernmental Organization), the Hertie School of Governance (Germany), Sciences Po (France, lead institution for the project) and the Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden). CIVICA will also be joined by the London School of Economics and Political Science (United Kingdom) as an Associated partner. Selected by the European Commission as one of the pilot European Universities, the application of CIVICA received 92/100 points.
    As announced on June 26 by the Commission a total of 54 applications were received, of which 17 have been selected and awarded funding.

  • A new Magna Charta Universitarium : MCU 2020 Consultation open

    On its 30th anniversary, The Magna Charta Universitatum has been updated and has been released as MCU 2020 by the Magna Charta Observatory, an IAU Member, for consultation and comments. The Magna Charta Universitatum details fundamental values for universities and was first signed by 388 rectors in Bologna in September 1988.   • European University Association (EUA) - Michael Murphy elected EUA President

    Michael Murphy of University College Cork has been elected as the new president of The European University Association (EUA) during the EUA General Assembly held in Paris on 11th April, 2019. On the same occasion, the EUA General Assembly also voted for the Association’s new Board members. Murphy, a member of the EUA Board since 2017 and Chair of the EUA Learning & Teaching Steering Committee, succeeds Rolf Tarrach, who has served EUA as president since 2015. The new president graduated in Medicine from University College Cork and received his doctorate from the National University of Ireland.

  • Conference of Spanish University Rectors (CRUE) - Action plan for Agenda 2030

    CRUE, the Spanish Universities association, a Member of the IAU, is collaborating with the Spanish government to develop the National Action Plan for the Implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Roberto Fernandez, President of CRUE, is a member of the Spanish Council of Sustainable Development and participated in the Council’s launch in Madrid on 26 February. Headed by the High Commissioner of the Spanish government for Agenda 2030, Cristina Gallach, the Council, formed of 50 civil society representatives, will be responsible for implementing the government’s actions for achieving Agenda 2030. CRUE is also examining policies and programmes to identify opportunities to implement the SDGs effectively in the Spanish higher education system via its Inter-sectoral Committee for the 2030 Agenda.

  • Bergen Summer Research School (BSRS) 17-27 June 2019 - Call for Application

    Applications are still open until 24 February 2019 for the Bergen Summer Research Schoo (BSRS).   • AUF Symposium - "University governance in the digital age"

    The Francophonie School for Administration and Management (ESFAM) and the Francophonie Institute for University Governance (IFGU) are organizing an international symposium : "University governance in the digital age", on 28 and 29 March 2019 in Sofia (Bulgaria).   • Launch of Charm-European University a new university alliance

    On January 15th, 2019, the University of Barcelona, Trinity College Dublin, Utrecht University, the University of Montpellier and Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest together launched Charm European University (Charm-EU), an alliance focusing on interdisciplinary, challenge-based education. The Rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias, explained that the 17 objectives set out by the UN’s 2030 agenda will serve as direct inspiration for the new university. For the future students of this alliance, academic programs will be avalaible in Catalan, Spanish, French, English, Dutch, Hungarian and Gaelic. More

  • International Telematic University (UNINETTUNO) - University for Refugees

    On January 7th, 2019, at UN headquarters of New York, the International Telematic University (UNINETTUNO) presented the project “University for Refugees”, a multilingual portal created with the aim to gives refugees and asylum seekers (also living in international refugee camps) the chance to access for free UNINETTUNO academic programs.   • University of Geneva - 2nd Edition of the Geneva Trialogue

    The Geneva Trialogue, took place on Monday 21 January 2019 at Campus Biotech, Geneva, Switzerland. The theme this year is ‘Scaling Education for the SDGs’. For this second edition the University of Geneva joined force with UNITAR, the UN Institute for Training and Research, and XuetangX, China’s largest MOOC platform, to convene thought leaders, education innovators and decision makers from educational institutions, international organizations and the private sector. Through keynote talks, showcasing of projects, cross-cutting panel discussions, topical workshops and networking opportunities, the event explored ways to collaborate on scaling SDG education.   • SIDA and AAU – Female participation in science in African Universities

    Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) in collaboration with the Association of African Universities (AAU) invite African scholars to conduct studies on the topic: Factors that affect female participation in science in African universities. The study should seek to identify empirically those factors, social, economic, political, cultural, etc. that influence female participation in science programs in African universities.   • University of Tehran - Call for Participation for the UFGNSM 2019

  • AUF Project - "Welcome and integration of students in exile"

    43 universities in France, Lebanon, Belgium and Burundi - including IAU Members Université Paris-Est Créteil Val de Marne (France), Saint Joseph University of Beirut (Lebanon) and Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium) - have welcomed over 2000 students who are refugees or asylum-seekers in the context of the AUF project ‘Welcome and integration of students in exile’ (Accueil et intégration des étudiants en exil). The students from 53 countries in the Middle East and Sudan will follow a programme which includes training in French for non-French speaking students and involves links with local associations and private and public organisations.   • CEU to Open Vienna Campus for U.S. Degrees in 2019

    The Central European University (CEU) announced on 25 October that incoming students will study at a new campus in Vienna beginning in the academic year 2019-20. The CEU Trustees authorized the move as of December 1, 2018 given that the Hungarian government has refused to sign an agreement allowing CEU to operate in Hungary. The signing of the agreement has been required by the Hungarian government itself as a condition for CEU to be able to continue operating in Hungary. The Hungarian government has negotiated an agreement with the State of New York to this effect, but now refuses to sign it, thus forcing CEU out of Hungary. See more information here.

    NAFSA: Association of International Educators launches a call for applications for the 2019 NAFSA Global Dialogue Fellowship Program.   • Allameh Tabataba’i University - Inauguration of new Unesco Chair

    The UNESCO Chair on the Communication of Science and Technology was inaugurated at Allameh Tabataba’i University, Iran, an IAU Member, on 16 May. The ceremony was attended by Esther Kuisch-Laroche, Director of the UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office and Mansour Gholami, Minister of Science, Research and Technology. The Chair is responsible for affairs of regional countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan, and for enhancing the existing scientific cooperation between these countries.

  • University of Oslo - MOOC on Academic Freedom

    The new massive open online course (MOOC) on academic freedom and other core higher education values, starts on June 4:
    This course is designed for students and staff in higher education, but it will be relevant for NGOs and government agencies as well.
    The 3 week online course will explore the importance of free and open research, and how it relates to core higher education and societal values. Participants will understand why academic freedom is crucial for maintaining the quality and relevance of research in higher education, and we will learn about some of the current threats to academic freedom, and how this relates to the academic community worldwide.

    The course is prepared within the Erasmus+ project called Academic Refuge. The project aims to improve the capacity of European universities to assist refugees and threatened academics on campus and to promote understanding and respect for higher education values. This is a strategic partnership between the University of Oslo (coordinator), the Scholars at Risk network, the UNICA network and the University of Ljubljana. The European University Association (EUA) and the European Association for International Education (EAIE) are associate partners.

  • UOC’s eLearn Center has released the E-Learning Research Report 2017

    Learning via mobile devices, e-assessments, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and virtual reality are, in this order, the four most published e-learning topics in 2017. This is the conclusion of the E-Learning Research Report 2017 by the UOC’s eLearn Center, the online research, innovation and learning centre which analysed the 855 pieces of scientific research published on this subject area during this period that had the greatest impact.

  • The World University of Bangladesh (WUB) appoints Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor

    The World University of Bangladesh (WUB) announces the appointment of Professor Abdul Mannan Choudhury as Vice-Chancellor, this is his third time in office, and Professor Nurul Islam as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
    Professor Choudhury completed his Masters in Business Administration in Marketing from Manchester Business School and a Ph.D. in Human Resource Management from London, United Kingdom. He has worked previously in two prestigious universities such as University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and the Bayero University of Kano, Nigeria. He has more than 80 publications and around 40 years of teaching experience. As for Professor Nurul Islam, he completed his Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Prior to joining WUB, he served as a Vice-Chancellor at the Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Tangail, Bangladesh. Professor Nurul Islam has been engaged with the education industry for nearly 45 years.

  • University of Bergen - PhD Summer Research School on Global Challenges

    About one hundred PhD candidates, researchers and policy makers from around the world will gather in Bergen from 11-21 June, 2018 to attend the annual Bergen Summer Research School (BSRS).   • Saint-Petersburg University of Management Technologies and Economics - President passed away

    The founder and President of Saint-Petersburg University of Management Technologies and Economics, Professor Victor Andryeevich Gnevko has passed away on 28th February, 2018 at the age of 72 after a long illness. He has been an influential figure in the higher education landscape in Russia. He implemented the concept of continuing education within his university and made a great contribution to the development of international cooperation: he initiated the creation of the European Management Academy (Berlin, Germany).   • University of Tehran - Call for entries : Blue Vision International Photography Festival 2nd Edition

    Call for entries is now open for the Blue Vision International Photography Festival, an environmental international competition organized by art and ecosystem club at University of Tehran and with the help of students all over the world.   • New organisation in the Norwegian Education Sector

    The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU) and the Norwegian Agency for Digital Learning in Higher Education (Norgesuniversitetet) and the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme (PKU) have merged into one organisation with effect from 1 January 2018. The as yet unnamed new organisation has over 100 employees, and is led by Director General Harald Nybølet.

  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) - New Rector

    Professor Rocky S. Tuan, an eminent biomedical scientist has been formally appointed by The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as the eighth Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK for a period of six years from 1 January 2018. He succeeded to Joseph J.Y. Sung who will continue to serve as Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK.

    Ricardo Rivero, Professor of Administrative Law at the University of Salamanca (USAL) Law School, took office on December 18, 2017 as the new rector of the University of Salamanca, the oldest University in Spain. He succeded to Professor Daniel Hernández Ruipérez.

  • NUFFIC - FAIR Report

    FAIR project carried out by Nuffic (Dutch organisation for internationalisation in education) and financed by Erasmus+ was conducted during January 2015 to June 2017. FAIR stands for ‘Focus on Automatic Institutional Recognition’. A total of 23 higher education institutions in 6 European countries took part in the project which aims to improve recognition procedures for foreign academic credentials. FAIR report now publicly available includes practical recommendations for European HEI and public agencies.

  • AAU - EduTech Forum

    The Association of African Universities (AAU) and ten (10) Educational Technology Companies jointly hosted the inaugural Executive Educational Technology Forum (Executive EduTech Forum) in Accra Ghana from 21-22 November 2017. The event was attended by 100 participants from Highers Education sectors and representatives of Educational Technology Companies. In his Opening Speech the AAU Secretary General, Professor Etienne Ehouan Ehile invited the Educational Technology Providers to "take time to understand the needs of African Universities – then tailor their solutions to address real and proven needs."

    The Virtual University Environment and Sustainable Development (UVED) is launching a call for proposals for the production of digital or audio-visual educational resources in the field of Environment and Sustainable Development. The UVED calls for proposals have been introduced to enrich the supply of UVED resources, as well as to produce resources that fit into the training courses offered by French Higher Education institutions.   • Project “FIEST”: UNINETTUNO trains young Mediterranean movie-directors

    The International Telematic University UNINETTUNO continues its mission on professional and academic training of the new Mediterranean generations, with the project “FIEST– Formation Internationale à l’écriture de séries TV”.

    "FIEST" aims to train young students from Beirut, Tunis and Marrakech to write TV series.

    It is funded by funded by the European Commission and in partnership with COPEAM, RAI, FRANCE 2 and the Schools of Cinema of ALBA (Lebanon), ESAC (Tunisia) and ESAV (Morocco).

    UNINETTUNO organizes all the distance learning activities, including webinars and interactive sessions on the e-learning platform of the university, one of the few in the world also available in Arabic.

    "FIEST", together with the project "À Première Vue" for young Mediterranean movie-directors, enriches UNINETTUNO’s activities in collaboration with the institutions and schools of the Arab countries in the Mediterranean Area.

  • Sixth Palestinian Conference on Modern Trends in Mathematics and Physics - Call For Abstracts

    Palestine Technical University- Kadoorie, and in cooperation with Palestinian universities, is organizing the “Sixth Palestinian Conference on Modern Trends in Mathematics and Physics” (August 5-8,2018).

    The conference aims to provide a multinational platform where the latest trends in physics, mathematics and statistics can be discussed in a productive, research-conducive environment.

    a) Participants who wish to take part in the Conference are kindly asked to submit their abstracts no later than April 15, 2018 on the conference website.

  • The University of Gothenburg and Chalmers Score Top Marks for Their Sustainability Work

    In March last year, the Swedish Higher Education Authority was commissioned by the national government to carry out an evaluation of the work by universities to promote sustainable development. Eleven of the 47 evaluated universities were found to ‘have a well-developed process for incorporating sustainable development in education’. The Authority found the sustainability work at the other higher education institutions to be ‘in need of development’.

    Both Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg received a pass grade in all assessed areas: management and organisation; environment, resources and area; and design, implementation and results. The Centre for Environment and Sustainability, operated jointly by Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, is identified as an important platform for sustainability efforts.

  • Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) – Cooperation with Siam University

    Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Siam University (SU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 11 May 2017, to promote academic cooperation. The MoU was signed by Dr. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit, President, Siam University, and Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, President AIT. The AIT President also congratulated Dr. Mongkhonvanit on his election as Vice President of the International Association of Universities (IAU). AIT is also a member of IAU.

  • University of Gothenburg (Sweden) - Students choose green trip

    On the first weekend in June, 13 students from the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg travelled to Iceland to study the country’s conversion to green energy. To minimise their environmental impact, the students travelled by boat instead of flying. Those on the trip included students of law, environmental economics, human geography and statistics and they all have a common interest in climate change and sustainability issues. The project, called EnviroTravel, is run by the organization Handels Students for Sustainability (HaSS), which is an association for students at the School of Business, Economics and Law who want to work for sustainable development. This year’s trip to Iceland is being financed by the university’s internal climate fund.
