The Information Centre

The Information Centre is a resource for information and knowledge on all aspects of higher education worldwide

  • Established in 1989 and located at the IAU in Paris, France;
  • Monitored and managed by a team of information and data managers;
  • Constantly updated with new higher education publications and documents;
  • With proactive searches of information and documents from all regions of the world;
  • Forms part of the network of UNESCO Information Services and Documentation Centres.

Themes covered

  • Policies, systems of higher education, higher education institutions, programmes of study, qualifications, educational development and comparative education.
  • Issues related to the IAU priority themes: Ethics; Equitable access and success in higher education; Higher education and Education For All; Intercultural dialogue; Internationalization; Research and doctoral education; and sustainable development.

  • 40,000 documents on higher education worldwide
  • specialised journals, newspapers and magazines (see the list)
  • Reference works, guides to higher education
  • Multimedia resources
  • Vast stock of unpublished literature (conference and congress proceedings, reports, working papers and occasional papers, etc)
  • All current and past publications of the International Association of Universities
  • A complete archive of documents concerning the IAU from its foundation in 1950 to the present
  • The collection includes publications in one or other of IAU’s official languages, English and French, as well as in other languages when a summary in one of these two languages is available.

Electronic Publications

IAU Information Centre produces and updates on a continuous basis:

  • IAU Highlights from the Press, a monthly service providing a selection of articles on higher education topics which have appeared in the press worldwide. It is sent to IAU Members and is also available online.

  • HEDBIB, the International Bibliographic Database on Higher Education, contains over 39,000 references, with access to a growing number of electronic publications

  • World Higher Education Database (WHED) contains information on over 18,000 higher education institutions and education systems of 184 countries.

  • Selected bibliographies on a specific subject or theme
  • Information on national higher education systems and institutions, statistics, etc.
  • Information on the evaluation/recognition of degrees and other credentials
  • Data extraction from WHED

  • Part of the French higher education bibliographic agency, ABES, interlibrary loans network

IAU Member Institutions receive information services either free of charge or at a substantial discount.

Visiting the IAU/UNESCO Information Centre

The Information Centre is open from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 pm to educational professionals, researchers and students.
